Description
A rare carved wooden female effigy with incised scar designs and encrusted surface. The figure is probably a chief's figure which is a symbol of a local ruler's authority. According to literature such idols were brought out during the funeral of a Chief and were displayed in public during annual ancestor rituals. Mossi peoples, Burkina faso, West Africa. The sculpture measures 16.5 inches tall on metal display base. Provenance : The Thomas Wheelock Collection, New York.
