Description
A carved wooden female figure from the Yoruba peoples known as "Ere Ibeji" or Twin Idol. The mother of twins provides ritual care to such figures, bathing, dressing, adorning, and feeding them. Such daily handling is responsible for the well handled and smooth surface. This idol is adorned with glass beads, cowrie shells and indigo blue pigment on the coiffure. Yoruba Peoples, Nigeria, Africa. The Ibeji measures 12 inches tall. Provenance: The Dr's Noble & Jean Endicott collection, New York.
