Rare and old Bamana Tchiwara society shrine figure, a carved wooden shrine idol with incised scar designs and shown wearing a carved antelope headdress. Bamana peoples, Mali, Africa. The figure would have been covered in fiber exposing only the chiwara on top of the head. The idol measures 20 inches tall. Provenance: Ex. Sol and Josephine Levitt Collection, NY, acquired from J. Camp Gallery, NY 1980's.
Condition
fair, loss to some of the headdress horns, chips and scrapes, well weathered and well handled, oily patina.
