Description
A rare tall carved wooden female effigy with incised scar designs and well handled surface, wonderful treatment to the arms and knees slightly bent giving the sculpture a sense of motion, an overall energetic form. The figure is probably a chief's figure which is a symbol of a local ruler's authority. According to literature such idols were brought out during the funeral of a Chief and were displayed in public during annual ancestor rituals. Mossi peoples, Burkina faso, West Africa. The sculpture measures 28 inches tall on metal display base. Provenance : The Thomas Wheellock Collection, New York.
