Description
A very finely carved wooden female effigy with classic facial features, raised scar designs, hands carved to the torso, and with a well handled surface patina. Baule peoples, Ivory Coast, West Africa. Among the Baule peoples, their is a long standing tradition of men and woman having dream lovers and oracles, a person is married to both an earthly and a spirit spouse which this sculpture would represent, known as Blolo Bla. Scarifications on her face and belly individualized and enhanced her idealized beauty. This Idol measures 18.25 inches tall, 20.5 inches tall on custom wooden base. According to the consignor this sculpture was purchased by the Becker family in France in 1978. Provenance: Ex Eugene and Harriet Becker, New York, also a private New Jersey collection.
