Description
Elegant old carved wooden ceremonial mask with anthropomorphic central finial and classic facial style and design. Senufo peoples, Ivory Coast, West Africa. Among the Senufo families owned and wore such small, beautifully carved masks as insignia. The term kpeliye, or face of the jumping performer, refers to the dynamic performances in public dances during agricultural celebrations and funerary ceremonies. The Poro associations also maintain similar face masks to honor deceased members in performances restricted to men. This mask measures 13.5 x 6.5 inches. There is no display stand included. Provenance: Ex Eugene & Harriet becker collection, New York, also a Private New Jersey collection.
