Description
A carved wooden ceremonial mask with highly stylized zoomorphic and human like form, raised linear designs and swept back horns on the top. This angbai mask was most likely used during ceremonies of the Poro secret society. Angbai masks depict a number of incarnations of the great spirit, Afwi. The most common are Landai, a forest spirit that embodies the power of Poro, and Nyangbai, his wife. The mask is very well weathered and worn showing years of field use. The mask measures 24 x 10.5 x 5 inches. Provenance:EX William Siegman. Bill Siegman is recognized as one of the great experts of Ethnographic art from this region. Also a private NYC collection.
Condition
Fair, very well worn, old decay and erosion, what remains seems stable.
