Description
A carved wooden female effigy with stylized coiffure of a snake, and shown wrapped over the shoulder by another serpent. In southeast Nigeria among the Anang Ibibio, figures of Mami Wata blend with ideas of earlier water spirits and deities. She was considered a giver of wealth and was also linked with curing problems of infertility. The sculpture measures 15 inches tall on is custom 4 x 5 inch display base. Ibibio peoples, Nigeria, Africa. Provenance: Ex Daniel Simmons collection, Philadelphia, USA.
