Description
A carved wooden shrine idol of the Water Goddess Mami Wata (Mother Water) with multiple arms and three heads looking in all directions which represents the omnipotent power of the beloved Goddess who is popular in West and central Africa as well as in South America and the Caribbean. She is worshipped for he ability to bring good fortune though her followers , who also believe she aids in concerns related to infertility, impotence, or infant mortality. Some are drawn to her as an irresistible seductive presence who offers the pleasures and powers that accompany devotion to a spiritual force. Yet she also represents danger, for a liaison with Mami Wata often requires a substantial sacrifice such abstinence in the human realm. The idol measures 18 x 11 inches. The bottom of the statue is well worn suggesting ritual use. Provenance: Eugene & harriet Becker collection, New York.
