Description
Carved from a heavy dense piece of wood with a well handled golden honey colored surface and somewhat stick patina suggesting field use over many years. This type of sculpture is associated with the Poro religious society. These figures known as a Deble, was used at Poro festivities, such as initiations and funerals. Deble are held by their upper arms and pounded on the ground to mark a rhythm for dancers. The worn arms and neck on this piece show it was used repeatedly. Senufo peoples, Ivory Coast, West Africa. The sculpture measures 32.5 inches tall on its wooden display stand. Provenance: Franco Giovanni Scanzi collection, Italy / Ivory Coast
