Item Details
Description
Western Europe, Portugal, Lisbon region, Loures, Sacavem, ca. 1920 to 1940 CE. Stamped "S.J. BENCHAYA / CASA BLANCA" on base. A beautiful pottery bowl presenting a ring-form foot and thick walls that rise to a gently flared rim above a deep basin, all adorned in hues of navy, marigold, emerald, and caramel atop of white glaze ground. Note the mixture of styles in its decoration, with the exterior boasting Islamic elements such as a floral, arabesque design flanked above and below by an Art Deco-inspired maze motif border. S. J. Benchaya was a Jewish entrepreneur who imported ceramic dishes from Portugal to sell in his shop in Casablanca, Morocco from the 1920s to the 1940s. He is known for his gorgeous designs that were said to be the first incorporation of both traditional Moroccan pottery with European style. Size: 9.1" Diameter x 6.5" H (23.1 cm x 16.5 cm)
