Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok (Sawankalok) culture, Sukhothai Period, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A gorgeous set of 2 pottery bowls from ancient Thailand. The larger bowl presents a ring-form foot and thick walls that slant upwards to a flared and lipped rim, all enveloped in a lustrous celadon glaze. The interior basin of the dish has been elegantly adorned with an incised motif of fish and floral decoration surrounding a swirling, starburst-like design. Alternatively, the exterior is embellished by vertical ribs. The second bowl is of a more petite size, with a foot protruding from the base, and thick walls enveloped in attractive yellow-green glaze. A pair of fine examples from the Sawankhalok culture! Size of largest: 12.625" in Diameter x 2.5" H (32.1 cm x 6.4 cm)

These pieces have been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and have been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available for $50 to the buyer. Please contact us to request.

Condition
Larger bowl has several stable fissures to ribs along underside that are a result of expansion and age rather than repair, with minor nicks throughout and abrasions to base commensurate with age. Smaller bowl has nicks and chips to foot and glazed areas along exterior walls and basin surfaces, with heavy encrustations in scattered areas. Otherwise, both are intact and excellent with lovely remaining glaze and detail. TL drill hole beneath foot of each bowl.
