Description
(1885 - 1966) American admiral, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II and largely responsible for the successful 'island-hopping' campaign against the Japanese. Typed D.S. 'C.W. Nimitz' as Chief of the Bureau of Navigation, 1p. 4to., Washington D.C., July 5, 1939, response to a resignation request for Ensign Burrows W. Morgan. He states in part: '...The receipt of your references is acknowledged...The Bureau regrets that it will be unable to accept your resignation...as no relief is available for you at present...' File holes to the top margin, three tears have been repaired on the verso.
