Description
This lot consists of an unframed ink illustration on paper, done in the style of E.C. Segar (American, 1894-1938). Image depicts Segar's original character, Popeye, squinting at the viewer with a familiar, grimacing expression. Handwritten inscriptions in the margins of the drawing read, "Ahoy, John -- I yam what I yam -- an' I yam sincerely yers -- Popeye and SEGAR. 1-19-36." Overall unframed dimensions approximately 11.5" x 8.25".
E.C. Segar (American, 1894-1938) is best known for his creation of the cartoon sailor, Popeye, who first appeared in Segar's comic strip, Thimble Theatre, in 1929. As Anthony Mostrom wrote in the Los Angeles Times in March 2011: "Popeye's compelling combination of bizarre image, screwy lingo, ham-fisted violence and right-versus-wrong ethic proved irresistible to Depression-era Americans."
