Description
2 1/8 x 3 3/8 in. CDV-sized tintype. (Exceptional tonality, a few nicks.) Housed in full leatherette case with an attached notebook with envelope pocket and pencil loop. (Hinge partially separated, small tears at envelope). Verso of tintype inscribed "J. Bagg, Esq." The notebook is inscribed "Ira V. Case, Plano, IL," tentatively identifying the subject. The rest of the notebook is unused. Provenance: Berta A. Boss Schofield and Stewart M. Schofield, to Royal C. Schofield, Sebring, Ohio (paperwork).
Ira V. Casey enlisted as private on 20 July 1861 and was mustered in the next day into Co. H of the 1st Illinois Cavalry. He mustered out on 5 July 1862. In early March 1862, they pursued Confederate Brigadier General M. Jeff Thompson in southeastern Missouri. Although they did not capture Thompson, they did capture artillery. They then joined General John Pope to take New Madrid (Kentucky Bend) on the Mississippi, participating in the Battle of Island Number Ten and Battle at Tiptonville, TN. In June, they were among the first US troops to enter Memphis. The next month they were ordered to St. Louis and mustered out of service.
