Description
A photographic archive of Frank M. Carter, a photographer who operated a studio in Granville, Ohio, and who possibly worked as a photographer during the Civil War. (Images affixed to cardstock with tape, some toning). With hand-written Carter family tree (dampstain causing ink to bleed, still legible).
Highlighted by an outdoor tintype showing what is identified as Carter's photo studio/shop with hand-tinted skylights clearly visible at left and "Carter & Packard / Ringgold, GA" written on image in red ink. N.p., n.d. 3 7/8 x 3 3/16 in. (corners clipped, many dents to surface, few abrasions to surface). A man (possibly Carter) wearing a hat stands out in front of the building with his hands on his hips.
Features an outdoor image of a house with a small porch with three men, two in uniform. N.p., [ca 1861-1865]. 3 3/8 x 2 1/4 CDV on cardstock mount (creases, toned). Period inscription reads, "Taken in the South during war." A later hand identifies the possible photographer: "Probably taken by FM carter, was a Civil War Photographer."
Includes 16 cartes de visite, 3 cabinet cards, 7 tintypes, 2 real photo postcards, a snapshot, a boudoir card, a gem-sized portrait, and a large albumen family portrait. Mostly studio portraits, subjects include a tintype of Frank Carter, his daughters Dolly and Anna Lou, his brothers Alonzo and Henry, and other relatives. Also includes a few outdoor images including a tintype of the Carter house.
Four CDVs were taken by Carter himself with his Granville, Ohio imprint. Other images were taken by other photographers in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Granville, Ohio including: Lancaster, PA: Stehman & Eberman; Gill's City Gallery; Granville, OH: Sedgwick & Wilson; Fred M. Conlee; S.P. Tresize; H.M. Sedgwick; Atlantic City, NJ: A. Lincoln Myers; and Granville and Delaware, Ohio: Beach & Bodurtha.
