Description: This is one of eight bijinga prints by Utagawa Kunisada. Bijinga is a genre of woodblock prints depicting beautiful women. This print shows a woman, perhaps a geisha, in ornate dress playing the koto, a Japanese harp-like instrument. This print was made by Utagawa Kunisada, one of the most prolific print artists in 19th century Japan. It was published by two publishers, one is Maruya Seijiro and the other is unidentified.
Signed: Kunisada-ga (art of Kunisada) in red and yellow cartouche on bottom left corner. Publisher stamp on bottom right side, Maruya Seijiro. Publisher seal in bottom right corner is slightly torn off with the paper and unidentified.
Circa: 1850s
Dimensions: Paper 14.5x10 inches. Image 14x9.875 inches.
Condition: No significant rips, tears, or creases. Some spots of insect damage, see photos. Bottom right corner is torn. Some toning on paper.
Provenance: From the estate of a local retiree, whose grandfather collected Ukiyo-e prints throughout the 1930s.
