Rutherford B. Hayes ALS Dated 3 Months after His Wife's Death, Handsomely Displayed
A 1p autograph letter by 19th U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893), signed by him as "Rutherford B. Hayes" at lower right. Written at Hayes's estate Spiegel Grove in Fremont, Ohio on September 20, 1889. Expected folds and light toning. Isolated loss along one fold at lower right, else very good to near fine. Displayed above a transcript of the letter, and to the right of a "Presidents of the United States" First Day of Issue postal cover with a Colorano "Silk" Cachet postmarked from Chicago, Illinois on May 22, 1986. The upper left corner displays an engraved plaque and reproductions of period political ephemera dating from Hayes's 1876 presidential election. The sight size of the letter is 5.25" x 6.5" while the overall frame size is 21.875" x 19.5" x 1."
Hayes's wife Lucy Webb Hayes (1831-1889) had suffered a stroke and died at age 57 three months previously, on June 25, 1889. Hayes wrote this letter to Clare Hanson Dorsey Mohun (1840-1918), his and his wife's mutual friend, assuring her that "my precious wife" would have wanted Mohun to keep the "old hymn book" belonging to "the Dear One." A devoted Methodist, Lucy was heavily involved in the temperance movement, and later became the president of the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Church.
