From the library of Ephraim C. Dawes - "Letters and Messages of Rutherford B. Hayes, President of the United States, together with Letter of Acceptance and Inaugural Address" published Washington, 1881. Inscribed in ink: "To Col E.C. Dawes / with kind regards / Rutherford B. Hayes" with additional illegible writing. Damage and losses to outside spine, pages in overall good condition. Ephraim Cutler Dawes (May 27, 1840 – April 23, 1895) was a Union Major and brevet Lieutenant-Colonel during the Civil War serving under Grant and Sherman. At Shiloh he refused an order to retreat from his panicked Colonel. Wounded during the Atlanta Campaign of 1864, he was honorably discharged later that year. After the war he became a popular public speaker and amassed one of the most important collections at that time of books and papers related to the Civil War. Provenance: Descended in the Bosworth / Dawes family.
