19th century portrait photo of Ephraim C. Dawes, in wood frame, and certificate dated October 23, 1893 from the Ohio National Guard's Lincoln Guards Company I confirming E.C. Dawes is enrolled as a contributing member of Company I, First Infantry. Some foxing and discoloration. Neither examined out of frames. Ephraim Cutler Dawes (May 27, 1840 – April 23, 1895) was a Union Major and brevet Lieutenant-Colonel during the Civil War serving under Grant and Sherman. At Shiloh he refused an order to retreat from his panicked Colonel. Wounded during the Atlanta Campaign of 1864, he was honorably discharged later that year. After the war he became a popular public speaker and amassed one of the most important collections at that time of books and papers related to the Civil War. Provenance: Descended in the Bosworth / Dawes family. Photo image: approx. 2 1/4" x 1 7/8", frame: approx. 4 1/4" x 3 3/4".
