Description
**First Time At Auction**
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, East Sepik, Abelam, early to mid 20th century CE. This wild-eyed, handwoven, vegetal fiber mask features a decorative perimeter of yellow, black, white, and red zig-zag patterns that are both brilliantly painted and excellently preserved. Echoing its oblong shape, a central red oval encases a hooked nasal ridge (possibly for hanging ornamentation) and two round eyes, dramatically surrounded by concentric ovoid open work. The elliptic visage is topped with a large protruding knob encompassed by a painted black circle. Both the shape and coloring of this mask are reminiscent of a treasured crop within Abelam society - the yam. At times growing up to 12 feet long, yams serve as an important status symbol in Abelam society. Abelam men adorn these large yams in flowers, leaves, fruits, and masks, such as this one, during a yearly ceremony. Size: 15" L x 10" W x 8.75" H (38.1 cm x 25.4 cm x 22.2 cm); 23.125" H (58.7 cm) on included custom stand.
