Description
Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. 20th century CE. A beautiful and well-preserved example of an avian-form yam mask, made from woven materials and decorated with feathers on its underside. The mask is hand painted with red and grey pigments, created for festivals surrounding the cherished yam, the crucial crop of the Abelam people of northeast Papua New Guinea. Masks like this example have traditionally been used to adorn the heads of huge tubers, rather than humans. Size: 24.5" L x 9" W x 10" H (62.2 cm x 22.9 cm x 25.4 cm)
