Description
**First Time At Auction**
Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Xenon, ca. 4th century BCE. A unique Greek pottery vessel with a tapering body, extended flared rim, and circular base from the Apulian region of southern Italy. Hand painted in earthen hues of tan and beige to depict two stylized leafy tendril patterns adorning its exterior, this vessel is a wonderful example of a type of pottery specific to Southern Italy, known as Xenon ware. Contrary to its ornamental motif, this object, called a kalathos, was an everyday utilitarian object, used for holding fruit or wool. Within art, however, a kalathos was a potent symbol of fertility and abundance. For example, illustrations on vases from Southern Italy at this time use the kalathos to symbolize a future marriage. A beautiful and rare example of Xenon pottery! Size: 7.75" Diameter x 5.5" H (19.7 cm x 14 cm)
Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000

Condition
A well-preserved example. Ancient misfiring creating red hues that wre intended to be black but are quite attractive nevertheless. Expected surface wear and pigment loss as shown. Some small areas have been repainted. Overall, intact and excellent!
