Description
**First Time At Auction**
Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. An attractive two-part vessel used to store soaps and scented perfumes for the bath, decorated in the Xenon style with registers of repeated stylized "V", "S", and "Z" motifs in added matte pigment over the glossy black glaze. The black has attained a silvery iridescence. Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matt red decoration over black glaze. This lekanis is a beautiful example of Xenon ware. Size: 4" in diameter x 2.75" H (10.2 cm x 7 cm)

Condition
Small area of repair/restoration to rim of lid. Small nicks/chips to rim of lower section/container. Nice iridescence to black finish.
