Item Details
Description
Magna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. An attractive lidded vessel used to store soaps and scented perfumes for the bath, decorated in the Xenon style with registers of repeated radiating lines and curlicues added in matte pigment over the glossy black glaze. The black has attained a silvery iridescence. Xenon ware is a specific type of Apulian pottery, named after a vase in Frankfurt (Beazley, EVP, p. 219,1.) that is inscribed with the name: XENON. The type is distinguished by added matte red decoration over black glaze. This lekanis is a beautiful example of Xenon ware. Size: 4.05" W x 3.95" H (10.3 cm x 10 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
