Description

Intriguing Jackie Kennedy ALS to Doubleday Publishing, "...I am not enough of a masochist"

Autograph letter signed on blue card stock, 6" x 4". Undated. Signed on the verso by Jacqueline Kennedy as "Jackie". Accompanied by a photocopy of the original envelope showing the letter was for Robert Barker of Doubleday. Given the original envelope was not mailed, and that Jacqueline worked for Doubleday, this letter may have been sent interoffice. Fine condition with slight wrinkle to the verso.  From the collection of Ron Hoskins, Assassinologist.

An intriguing letter in which Jacqueline is offered a "dummy' book (A set of bound blank pages used as a model to show the size and general appearance of a book being published) which she notes is "beautiful" and asked to have it bought for her as a Christmas present. But added "..but I am afraid I am not enough of a masochist to try to sell such an expensive and specialized book today." She also adds "Don't you think it is more of a Harry Abrams books?" At the time, Abrams, formerly Harry N. Abrams, Inc., was an American publisher of art and illustrated books, children's books, and stationery, so Jackie was weighing in on the marketing aspect

Jackie Kennedy accepted a job as an editor at Viking Press in New York City and later moved to Doubleday as a senior editor. She enjoyed a successful career in publishing until her death on May 19, 1994.
