Native American, Northwest New Mexico, Shiprock area, Navajo, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-built pottery jar with a flat base, a lightly-carinated body that tapers to an hourglass-style shoulder, and a flared rim decorated with dozens of impressed frets. Pots like this were used to cook beans and other smaller foods, and the mica-rich clay allows for frequent firings without structural deformities. Size: 5.9" W x 5.8" H (15 cm x 14.7 cm).

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, acquired from 1958 to 1962
