This copy has been attributed by family tradition of the consignor, surnamed Jefferson, to have been from the library of founding father Thomas Jefferson. Written in an early hand on the front pastedown, in ink, "This Book and many others in my library belonged to Mr. Jefferson"; on the front free endpaper is a signature in ink, "Thos. Jefferson," though this does not conform with the signature of the President. The work is contained in a half morocco slipcase dating from the early 20th century, titled in gilt on the spine, and at the foot: "Thos. Jefferson's Copy/ Philadelphia/ 1792." Research has not confirmed the association, but it perhaps bears further investigation.
