Carved folk art cane by Thomas Jefferson Craddock, (b. circa 1849) a Civil War veteran who carved and sold his wares at Jefferson's Tomb at Monticello. The cane is carved over every inch and includes a Masonic compass, the Rotunda at the University of Virginia, an American eagle with shield, many birds and animals, and the words: "UNIVERSITY VA / ROTUNDA UVA BURNT SUNDAY OCT. 27,1895 / 1826 JEFFERSONS TOMB / THOS. JEFFERSON OF VA, BORN APR. 2 1743, WAS PRESIDENT USA 1801 TO 1809/ WROTE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE 1776, FOUNDER UNIVERSITY VA 1819 / DIED JULY 4, 1826, THIS CANE WAS CUT NEAR JEFFERSONS TOMB, MONTICELLO VA / JEFFERSON'S DYING WORDS I RESIGN MY SPIRIT TO GOD MY DAUGHTER TO MY COUNTRY". Good surface, metal tip, no condition issues found. Approx. 35 1/2" H.
