**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. An adorable cup of a squat form that is free-blown from translucent glass of a soft yellow-green hue. The vessel has a flared foot with a rough pontil scar underneath the slender stem, an inverted bell-shaped body, and a flared rim surrounding the deep interior. A singular trail of similarly colored glass wraps roughly four or five times around the middle of the cup body to imbue it with a personalized presentation, and thick rainbow-hued iridescence has formed across the surfaces. Size: 3.2" W x 3.1" H (8.1 cm x 7.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Bonhams, London, Knightsbridge "Antiquities" auction (May 8, 2013, part of lot 185); ex-private United Kingdom collection, acquired between 1955 and 1976 in Lebanon and the Near East

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

#140367
Condition
Abrasions to foot and body, with light encrustations, chipping to uppermost glass trails, micro-bubbling within glass matrix, and one stable fissure stemming from rim, otherwise intact and very good. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time. Nice earthen deposits, root marks, and iridescence throughout.
