Description
**First Time At Auction**

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A pretty and nearly translucent glass cup with a light green hue resting on a ring base with walls that swell gently up then outward to a slightly flared rim. The surface is covered with nice areas of rainbow iridescence that have formed over the ages. Glass was a prized material in the ancient world, enthralling peoples because it was simultaneously transparent and solid. Roman artisans learned the craft of glass blowing from Egypt, and glass production soon spread throughout the Roman Empire. This cup was likely a cherished vessel owned by a wealthy member of society who could afford precious glass objects. Size: 2.75" W x 3" H (7 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection acquired early 1990s
