Thomas Jefferson Autograph Note Signed "Th: J." One page of a bifolium, 5.75" x 4.5", no place; January 30, 1808. Addressed to Attorney General Caesar A. Rodney. The letter reads, in full: "A consultation is necessary to-day, and as notice could not be given last night, the hour must depend on Mr. Gallatin's arrival at his office, he being generally the latest and most uncertain to his hour. Will you be so good as to be within reach at that time?" The letter is framed along with an image of Jefferson and an informational plaque to the overall size of 25" x 31.25". Caesar A. Rodney was made Attorney General on January 20, 1807, while Albert Gallatin had served as Secretary of Treasury since May 14, 1801. The Second Embargo Act had been signed just three weeks prior to this meeting and had been met with resistance. Rather than putting pressure on the British and French, the embargos hurt the United States' economy more, and Jefferson was facing growing tension. By the end of the year, there would be widespread opposition to the Embargo Acts. The embargo was ultimately withdrawn on March 1, 1809 during the final days of Thomas Jefferson's presidency.
