John Brown, Jr. Two Autograph Letters Signed "John Brown Jr.". The first letter is one page, 7.25" x 9.25", Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio; June 15, 1860. A short letter written to an unknown recipient, which reads in full: "Returning from Penna I find your note asking when I shall be 'at home'. Shall be most of the coming week. Expect to leave for N. Elba N. York a week from next Monday. Shall be most happy to see you before I leave." The second letter is three pages of a bifolium, 5.25" x 8", Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio; August 10, 1861. This letter is addressed to E.E. Johnson, Esq. and discusses Brown's recent financial investments as well as his opinions on the war and desire to raise a company to fight for the Union in Kansas. It reads in part: "...Now about the war. It is true I am going into this war and also to Kansas, but not into the Brigade of General Pomeroy, but of Gen. Lane. He has offered me a good position in his Staff which I may accept, but should prefer taking on a Company and forming the Regiment of Col. Montgomery. Gen. Lane will if I take a company from here muster them in at Leavenworth as from Ohio, this would give them ten cents a mile and rations, be five cents a mile out and back with rations. Of course this amount would cover the expense. I am desirous of getting a number of good men to go with me to Kansas. Have already several choice men who are going. Can you not find some good men who want to go. My plan is to join the United States volunteer forces for 3 years or the war, and especially to join the Kansas boys. You may be sur that when Lane's Brigade moves, it will move the line between slavery and freedom along with them. Mr. George H. Hoyt who went as volunteer counsel for my Father at the time of his trial in Charlestown Virginia, has just come on from Massachusetts to join me for the Kansas Army..." John Brown, Jr. was the eldest son of the famed abolitionist John Brown. Although he did not participate in the Harpers Ferry raid, he was still a strong supporter of the Union and abolitionist movement. In 1861, Brown recruited a company of soldiers to serve in Kansas under Col. James Montgomery, who served under James H. Lane. He was only able to muster 66 men, however, and the company later merged with Col. Charles Jennison's First Kansas Cavalry, known as Jennison's Jayhawkers. Brown served as captain of the company until May 1862, when he resigned due to health issues. Condition. The June 15, 1860 letter is affixed to a larger sheet with a strip of adhesive tape at the top center. The August 10, 1861 letter is affixed to a larger sheet with a piece of adhesive tape at the center of the page on verso. Usual flattened mail folds with creasing. Minor edge toning and soiling.
