Benson J. Lossing, American Historian, ALS Re: "Memoir of Henry Clay"
A 1p autograph letter signed by historian Benson John Lossing (1813-1891) as "Benson J. Lossing" at lower right. Written at The Ridge in Dover Plains, New York on December 20, 1889. On cream blue-ruled paper. Expected paper folds and isolated minor stains, else near fine. 4.875" x 8."
Lossing wrote this thank you note to Robert C. Winthrop (1809-1894), the author of the "Memoir of Henry Clay" (Cambridge: J. Wilson & Son, 1880) who had recently gifted him a copy. Lossing wrote in part, "I thank you for your courtesy in sending me a copy of your 'Memoir of Henry Clay.' I have read it with great satisfaction. I was not aware that the great statesman, late in life, was baptized and became a communicant of the Protestant Episcopal Church in America - a church in which I have been a communicant more than 40 years…"
Lossing was a historian, illustrator, and editor who managed the "American Historical Record" between 1872-1874. His correspondent Winthrop also delighted in the humanities. Winthrop served as a Senator from Massachusetts and a Congressman from Massachusetts between 1840-1851, and as Speaker of the House of Representatives between 1847-1849. After his political career, Winthrop focused on his personal interests in literature, history, and charitable giving.
