Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Southwest, Four Corners area, ca. 1100 to 1300 CE. A special example of Anasazi black-on-white pottery, this bowl features a wide register of black step motifs with black dots adorning the white ground between these step motifs. Below this are two faint horizontal black bands, and a single band adorns the rim. A wonderful example with an accompanying exhibition card (see below) that shares more about its history. Size: 7.25" in diameter x 3.25" H (18.4 cm x 8.3 cm)

An old exhibition card reads: "Indian pottery of the developmental Pueblo and Great Pueblo periods, dating from 700-1300 AD. These are a few of the pieces dug by Mr. Bill Mitchell, Lakin, Kansas, in 1956-1962, in the Four Corners area of Utah, Colorado & New Mexico. Exhibited by the Don Shaw Family, Lakin, Kansas." Note the dates on this note refer to a group of pieces found together of which this was one. We believe the dating of this piece to be ca. 1100 to 1300 CE.

Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962
