**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Central/North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A gorgeous textile fragment comprised of tightly-woven natural cotton fibers with elaborate geometric and figural motifs in painted hues of salmon-pink, coffee, espresso, and sky-blue. The decorative program consists of four columns filled with abstract zoomorphic creatures resembling small primates, hedgehogs, mirrored serpents, and circular sand dollars, and the narrow columns in-between boast highly-abstract geometric 'creatures' with petite circular 'eyes.' A colorful example of fine Peruvian artistry! Sewn onto a modern beige panel atop a dark-brown, museum-quality fabric. Size (textile): 13.5" W x 12.625" H (34.3 cm x 32.1 cm); size (fabric): 29.75" W x 29.25" H (75.6 cm x 74.3 cm).

Condition

This is a fragment of a larger textile item, and modern beige fabric completes the form. Two small areas of loss to interior, with fading to original painted colors, and minor staining. Iconography is still visible and clear.
