Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A lovely textile panel fragment composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of coffee, cobalt, wheat, cream, fuchsia, and pink. The textile displays two different panels that are sewn together along the inner edge. One half contains three horizontal registers of abstract avian figures with trifurcated tails, lengthy legs, an outstretched wing, and a gaping beak. The other half depicts six bands of abstract conjoined avian heads, each with a pair of circular eyes surmounting a pyramidal head above short prongs representing a beak. Sewn on a modern textile panel atop a fabric display panel. Size (textile): 13.5" L x 8.375" W (34.3 cm x 21.3 cm); size (display panel): 23" L x 18.75" W (58.4 cm x 47.6 cm).
Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Gary Drimmer collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA, 1950 to 1960

Condition
Light loosening to some interior and peripheral threads, with light fading and staining to areas of original pigmentation, and light creasing. Iconography is still visible and vivid.
