Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1300 CE. A beautiful collection of four textile fragments, each composed of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of cream, tan, wheat, crimson, cobalt, white, and gold. Two small strips are presented with either yellow or dark-yellow pigment and both have a trio of abstract birds. A tall, rectangular panel is formed from blue-dyed threads and has nine diagonal registers of birds rendered in the negative space of the sewn white threads. The largest panel depicts a pair of highly-stylized avian figures with angular bodies, slender beaks, and spiraling head projections in red or gold and are enclosed by two blue strips atop a brown ground. Size of largest (blue borders): 9.75" W x 5.875" H (24.8 cm x 14.9 cm).
