Description
Silvia Heyden (Swiss-American, 1927-2015), Tapestry
wool and linen, woven in cool lavenders and pinks and warm corals and golds, in a non-representational eccentric weft design with various sections of blended colors and assorted weaves, hanging sleeve to back, the artist's block-printed signature tag sewn to verso.
4 ft. 3 in. x 5 ft. 6 in.
Born in Basel, Switzerland, Heyden studied at the School of Arts in Zürich, where she built a strong foundation in color theory. She and her husband lived in many places, but considered Durham, North Carolina home.
“From the beginning, I was convinced that there was a tapestry, waiting to be uncovered, that could not be painted or designed on paper, but one that would, and evolve from the process of leaving itself. In the Bauhaus tradition, my dialogue with the loom has been one of my greatest sources of inspiration in finding a tapestry that reveals the essence of the woven medium, one that will bring the art of tapestry to a new height.” - Silvia Heyden
Private Collection, Fernandina, Forida
