Description
**First Time At Auction**
Native American, Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi), Four Corners area, ca. 1075 to 1250 CE. A large black-on-white Anasazi "reserve" bowl created via the traditional coil and scrape technique. The exterior is polished and unslipped, while the interior is white slipped with black motifs of concentric lines and acute angles. A deep bowl like this was made for heating and serving food, and ultimately became a treasured grave good or offering. Size: 5.05" W x 2.25" H (12.8 cm x 5.7 cm)
Provenance: ex-Joan Shaw collection, bought in 1971; loaned to the Mesa Verde Museum, 1962-1970; ex-Bill Mitchell collection, Cortez, Colorado, USA, from 1958-1962

Condition
A very fine hairline fissure from the rim down one side which has been stabilized with adhesive. Nice firing marks and deposits. All pigment is original and there is no overpaint. Handwritten collection number on underside.
