Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A wonderful set of hand-formed terracotta figures. A short standing figure has arched feet, attenuated limbs, a curved back, and rounded shoulders. It also displays characteristic sheepface details such as a prominent nose, pointed ears with circular ear spools, rounded eyes, and a tall forehead with a decorative headband. A second figure, seated and covered by a blanket or shawl, showcases stylized toes, rounded shoulders, and a painted beaded necklace. The seated figure has similar sheepface qualities as the smaller figure, such as a protruding nose, flared ears with earspools, and rounded eyes, but also displays a fuller face, an extremely tall forehead, and an elaborate headband with an upturned triangular crest. Both figures are painted in a dark-red hue with bright white details, and both are lovely examples from this ancient shaft-tomb culture. Size (smaller): 2.875" H (7.3 cm); size (larger): 4.625" H (11.7 cm).

Both figures have age-commensurate surface wear and abrasions, minor fading and losses to surface pigmentation, small chips to feet, heads, and headbands, with light earthen deposits in recessed areas and great mineral deposits throughout.
