Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two wonderful hand-built pottery figures, each one adorned by a lustrous deep-red slip with white details. Each example displays classic "sheepface" characteristics such as projecting noses, pointed ears and round earspools, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, and tall foreheads with intricate headbands. The standing figure has arched feet and attenuated limbs, delineated male genitalia, rounded shoulders, and a thick neck; one hand is holding a small instrument of some kind. His forked head displays an elaborately-incised headband with a tall arch in the center. The seated figure exhibits more normal-sized limbs while holding a large flute in both hands. His finely-detailed headband flaunts a trio of roundels, one central and two lateral, with a vertical striped motif painted in a white hue. A fabulous duo! Size of largest (standing): 9" H (22.9 cm).

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

Condition

Standing figure has head and portion of forked forehead reattached. Seated figure has one leg, one arm, and flute repaired from multiple pieces with adhesive residue and light overpainting along break lines. Both figures have expected age-commensurate surface wear, fading to pigmentation, and small chips to limbs and heads, otherwise very good. Light earthen and mineral deposits throughout.
