Eleanor Roosevelt ALS: "courage is hard to find to take such ordeals"
2pp autograph letter signed by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) as "Eleanor Roosevelt" on the second page. Written in Washington, D.C. on "Saturday" though the envelope postmark indicates it was written on or near March 5, 1938. On bifold cream stationery paper with gilt embossed "The White House / Washington" letterhead, complete with the presidential seal. Accompanied by the original "The White House / Washington" transmittal envelope, also written in Roosevelt's hand, and bearing a cancelled 3 cent violet George Washington stamp. With expected paper folds, else near fine. 4.5" x 6.875". The envelope is letter-opened at top.
First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt wrote to Mr. R.D. Adolph of Bear Mountain, New York, in part:
"I am so sorry, more for you even than for Mrs. Adolph. You will have all the anxiety + courage is hard to find to take such ordeals but somehow I know you will do it.
Let me know how best I can help you. I will go + see Mrs. Adolph in April & in the meantime write now + then -
With admiration + sympathy."
