Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $100**

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Inca culture, 1100 to 1500 C. This earthtone textile strap fragment is comprised of tightly-woven fibers in crimson, gold, brown, and cream hues. The composition is comprised of seven abstract avian-like figures, each with a large headdress, long and thin beak, and almond-shaped eyes which differ in color from their respective bodies. Birds were symbols of celestial movements and events, so they are a rather common iconographical motif in Incan society. Mounted on a fabric-lined cardboard backing. Size: 17.625" L x 1.875" W (44.8 cm x 4.8 cm).

Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia from 1971 to 1972
