Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chimu/Inca culture, ca. 1100 to 1400 CE. This vibrantly-colored textile strap fragment is comprised of tightly-woven fibers in red, gold, green, cream, blue, and brown hues. The composition includes polychromatic spiralized designs, each interwoven with a reverse-direction brown spiral, and all are outlined by two thick bands of red fiber. Spiralized designs like these are commonplace in Pre-Columbian societies and were representative of solar movements throughout the sky as well as humanity’s interconnectivity with nature. Mounted on a fabric-lined cardboard backing. Size: 19.25" L x 1.5" W (48.9 cm x 3.8 cm).
Provenance: private Slavin collection, acquired in Peru and Bolivia from 1971 to 1972
