Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit, Yupik or Aleut people, ca. mid-20th century CE. A wool felt and hide embroidered textile wall hanging known as a nivingajuliat. The white hide is cut, and applique sewn over the red felt, creating a scene with figures, a bird, and an igloo. Traditionally women sewed and created these works as decorative items to sell and often depict traditional lives of arctic people and animals. The art form known as nivingajuliat developed from craft programs sponsored by the government. Size: 25.25" L x 16.5" W (64.1 cm x 41.9 cm)

Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection; acquired in Nome Alaska, USA in 1964
