Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. Two fabulous redware vessels, one a wide shallow bowl with a slightly rolled rim and a rounded base, the exterior walls modeled to resemble a face with partially pierced eyes, a protruding nose, open mouth, and chin, and decorated with stylized geometric motifs perhaps to represent face paint or tattoo designs. Paired with this is another lustrous redware bowl, also with a wide shallow body, only this one has a wavy rim and is lifted upon a high pedestal. What a lovely pair! Size: pedestal bowl measures 9.375" W x 5.75" H (23.8 cm x 14.6 cm)

Condition
A few nicks and repair to 2-3" section of the rim/wall of face bowl. Pedestal bowl is intact. Both with normal surface wear commensurate with age. Nice manganese deposits on interior of face bowl and scattered areas of pedestal vessel.
