PHILIPPI BEROALDO. Reggio Emilia: Dionysius Bertochus, 14 October, 1496. Folio (12" x 8"). Collates aa6, a6, b–i8, k4, l–y8, z4, &6, [con]8 [rum]8, A–K6, L4, M6 (complete.) Later full vellum over boards with title in manuscript to spine, marbled endpapers, binding toned/soiled. With 19th c. owner's bookplate to pastedown. Contents with worming to text and some margins throughout (removing or partially removing several letters to each leaf), light and faded water-stain to lower margin throughout (mostly quite faded), leaves d7 and C3 with corner-chips (no loss of text), else some occasional minor soiling and foxing, overall bright and clean. ********************************** Printing in Reggio Emilia began in 1494, and Bertochus was only the second printer to begin printing there. This is the first work from his Reggio press and quite beautifully printed with numerous woodcut initials throughout.
