Theodore Roosevelt had assumed the presidency after the assassination of President William McKinley (1843-1901) in September 1901. Roosevelt was nominated the Republican Party's presidential candidate in 1904, but his preferred running mate was not. Instead, Indiana Senator Charles W. Fairbanks (1852-1918) joined Roosevelt's ticket as vice presidential candidate.
Roosevelt / Fairbanks faced off against Democratic Party presidential candidate and New York judge Alton Brooks Parker (1852-1926) and his running mate, West Virginia Senator Henry Gassaway Davis (1823-1916). Parker's allegations that Roosevelt accepted secret corporate campaign donations did not dissuade voters from reelecting Roosevelt, who surged ahead in the polls with his ""Square Deal"" campaign promises. Roosevelt handily won the election, obtaining 56% of the popular vote and 336 Electoral College votes.
