Item Details
Description
Roman North Africa, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A mold-made pottery lamp from Roman North Africa. It has a rich, deep red color, especially around the nozzle, where it has darkened from use. It has a sunken discus, two pour holes on either side of the central design, an unpierced lug handle, and double spouts. The design on the discus of this lamp is a Chi Rho, one of the earliest forms of Christogram. It is surrounded by relief arrows and circles, done in the pretty style of lamps from this time and place. The outer circle has many small designs of this same style. Size: 5.8" W x 2.75" H (14.7 cm x 7 cm)
